Name Recombinant Procalcitonin (rPCT)
What is rPCT? Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, the latter being involved with calcium homeostasis. It is composed of 116 amino acids and is produced by parafollicularcells (C cells) of the thyroid and by the neuroendocrine cells of the lung and the intestine.
What is it used for? Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker that exhibits greater specificity than other proinflammatory markers (eg, cytokines) in identifying sepsis and can be used in the diagnosis of bacterial infections.
