Inserting DNA (encoding the protein sequence of interest) into an expression vector is the process for manufacturing recombinant proteins. These expression vectors, commonly plasmids which originate from bacteria, are able to infect living cells. When you transfect a host organism such as bacteria, yeast or mammalian cells with a plasmid, the recombinant DNA multiplies and recombinant protein produces within the cell. Synthesizing proteins in recombinant expression systems has the advantage of optional modifications such as protein tags for protein detection or purification.
